What is an Unerbite
An underbite is also called an anterior cross bite. It is a common type of dental condition in orthodontics treatment areas. In this situation, the bottom teeth overlap the top teeth, which causes the lower teeth to protrude out. Underbite can be mild or severe, depending on the overlap between teeth. Orthodontists plan underbite treatments according to the patient’s situation. The main goal of underbite treatment is to fix the jaw alignments and to put your crooked teeth in their place. Improve your facial esthetics and create a comfortable bite function. This safe process allows the fulfillment of every patient’s needs. At Top Nova Orthodontics, Dr. Abbasi will explain and guide every patient about their diagnosis, treatment, and other instructions and guidance to enhance your knowledge about the treatment plan.

What Causes an Underbite?
An Underbite, commonly known as Class three malocclusion, can be caused by many factors.
Common causes of Underbite include:
- Mouth breathing: Mouth-breathers keep their tongue down to clear their airways. The pressure from tongue on the palate promotes the growth of the upper jaw. When tongue is held down palate will lack that pressure and won't grow properly.
- Genetics: Genetics plays a vital role in getting misaligned teeth and size differences. Sometimes, patients are more likely to get underbite because of their family history.
- Underdeveloped upper jaw or Overdeveloped lower jaw. This is due to some skeletal abnormalities caused by differences in the sizes of the jaws, causing the lower jaw to protrude more and causing an Underbite.
- Thumb Sucking or Other Behaviors: Several behaviors, which may include thumb sucking or usage of a pacifier for a long term, can affect the structure and position of teeth and jaws. In the same way, tongue thrusting is also a factor to be considered.
- Irregular Tooth Eruptions : Occasionally, irregular tooth eruptions can cause underbite, creating crowding and spacing issues. When there is not enough space for teeth eruption, it will cause underbite.
Many other factors, including patients' lifestyle, genetic constitution, and other skeletal differences, cause an underbite.

Underbite Treatment Options
- Palatal Expansion: Expanders help to correct and improve the teeth' alignment and facial appearance. It restores the position and alignment of the upper jaw. It properly expands the mouth and bones.
- Underbite Correction with Braces: Braces are considered the primary treatment for underbite patients. They return the teeth to their original aligned position by applying pressure. This treatment can use a combination of wires, elastic bands, or plastic with brackets.
- Clear Aligners For Underbite Treatment: Clear aligners are plastic aligners that work similarly to braces. They apply constant pressure on the teeth to make them settle in a better position and prevent teeth from causing overbites.
- Reverse Pull Headgear: Adding other appliances, including orthodontic reverse pull headgear, for Underbite treatment bringing both the upper jaw forward and the lower jaw backward is very effective in the treatment of underbite.
- Surgery For Underbite : In extreme cases of underbite, there might be a need to perform surgeries. They are minor surgical procedures performed by expert orthodontists in which jaw repositions occur. And there are major surgical procedures which is necessary in the correction of some underbites.
